Shakhnazarov's visit
A famous Russian producer, screenwriter, merited Master of arts and Director General of Mosfilm Studios K.Shakhnazarov visited Washington DC November 17-20.
On November 18 with the support of American University’s Initiative for Russian Culture (AU IRC) the Embassy of the Russian Federation to the US showed Shakhnazarov’s movie “The Assassin of theTsar” (1991). More than 300 students and professors from DC area interested in Russian language, Russian history, literature, art as well as cinematography attended the event. Once the screening was over the author answered numerous questions telling the story of the film as well as sharing his personal experience as director. His final remarks that young people of both countries should jointly find ways of friendship and mutual understanding received a warm welcome.
After a reception at the Residence of the Russian Ambassador, National Geographic Society hosted a gala dinner “1914-2014 from Journalism to Cinematography” marking the 90th anniversary of Mosfilm studios as well as 100 years of Grosvenor’s story in the NG magazine “Young Russia – The Land of Unlimited Possibilities”. At the evening that was organized by ARCCF and IRC there took place a solemn award ceremony honoring Karen Shakhnazarov and Gilbert Grosevenor’s grandson whose name he shares, for their significant achievements in visual arts. Both honorees thanked Susan C. Lehrman for her personal contribution in preparing and organizing the events.
