On August 9 our senior diplomats paid Ms. Butina another visit
The Embassy continues to provide Maria Butina, who was arrested under a far-fetched pretext, with necessary consular assistance. Our fellow citizen holds up strong, determined to continue proving her innocence.
On August 9 our senior diplomats paid Ms. Butina another visit. They discussed the current state of affairs and morally supported her.
As a result of our demarches, Maria’s incarceration conditions have improved. She was granted permission to go to the gym, her daily ration got better. She finally got to see a dentist, who assigned therapy. However, her chronic arthritis became aggravated due to permanently low temperature in her cell. She is not allowed outdoor walks.
Maria told us that she receives letters of sympathy from people (1901 E St SE, Washington, DC 20003, Correctional Treatment Facility, DCDC Number 364794). She talks to her close ones over the phone, which helps deal with confinement stress.
She asked us to convey her words of gratitude to all friends, who had called her parents and showed support. They could definitely use it right now.
We will continue to regularly visit Maria and advocate her lawful rights and interests.
