Embassy Statement
We cannot but be disturbed by another hostile act of US officials against Russia. This time they have forced the owner of the 105,5 signal “Reston Translator”, an American partner of the “Sputnik” radio station, to register as a foreign agent. In case of not following DOJ's orders, the “Reston Translator” would have faced punitive consequences.
As a result the Americans would have lost their chance to hear the voice of “Sputnik”.
These steps signal continuation of the policy of pressure on the Russian mass media. It is obvious that now attempts are made to intimidate the commercial companies cooperating with our media resources.
We call on the U.S. authorities to stop the practice of restricting press freedom as regards the Russian media. Also, we would like to warn against imposition of individual restriction our correspondents in the U.S.
Intensification of struggle in the field of mass information does not meet the interests of Russian-American collaboration. We are set to develop full-fledged mutually beneficial dialogue with U.S. counterparts. We will put maximum efforts into making it impossible for the enemies of better Russian-American relations to raise the upper hand.
